For a sunshine destination such as Lanzarote, holidays are at the very heart of its economy. As the most eastern of the Canary Islands, just a few score miles from the African coast, Lanzarote is perfectly situated for pleasantly warm, dry weather – temperatures vary from around 21C in January to a high of about 29C in August. A low level of annual rainfall is also one of the great attractions of Lanzarote holidays, with just five-and-a-half inches falling a year.

Despite the volcanic origins of the Canaries, many of Lanzarote’s beaches are covered in beautiful white sand, and lazing on the beach all day are what Lanzarote holidays mean to many of its frequent visitors. Papagayo and Playa Blanca are two of the most popular beaches, and sun seekers return year after year to relax and enjoy the beautiful views.

This is made all the easier by the local authorities who forbid most billboard advertising and high-rise developments – all the better to maintain the scenery. The only high-rise building on the island is the impressive Grand Hotel in Arrecife, and it is all the more impressive when one realises that it was a burnt-out shell for many years – and something of a local eyesore – until its redevelopment a few years ago.

Lanzarote holidays certainly leave a good impression on the UK visitor. More than three million of them descend on the Canary Islands every year, and travel and tourism websites are full of testimonials from satisfied holidaymakers. Moreover, enough British people have settled in Lanzarote for good to justify a daily English language newspaper.

For people looking for Lanzarote holidays online, there is no shortage of travel options. Cheap flights to the Canary Islands are plentiful, and all the more so since budget airline Ryanair greatly expanded its services to the islands in October 2009 – offering 39 new routes, with 16 more to Gran Canaria, eight to Tenerife and 15 to Lanzarote itself. Announcing the expansion at the end of July, Ryanair said that its decision was partly based on the 100 per cent discount on winter airport charges throughout Spain and its territories, plus the country’s “zero” tourist tax.

Ryanair’s rival easyJet has also targeted the Canaries, making more services available to holidaymakers in North West England than ever before. From November 2009, the airline started offering cheap thrice-weekly flights to Lanzarote and Fuerteventura from Liverpool John Lennon Airport.
