Palma de Mallorca is the major city and port on the island of Majorca. Palma is also the capital city of the the3 Balearic Islands of Spain. The 3 Ballearic islands are Majorca, Ibiza and Menorca. The city of Palma is positioned on the south coast of the island on a body of water called the Bay of Palma. Palma port is used by ships from around the globe and being a port city Palma has always been cosmopolitan. The population of the city of Palma stands at approximately 380,000. Taking into account the whole of Palma including suburbs the population is around 510,000 which is around 50% of the entire population of Majorca.

Palma is famous for its magnificent Marivent Palace where royals stay when in Palma, including Queen Elizabeth II of England ion her visit there. Majorca has a vast history dating back to the Roman empire, Byzantine empire right the way to modern day. Majorca has many places of historic interest to visit and enjoy and contrary to the modern day misconception of the island as just a package holiday resort, there is so much more to it than this. Initially a Talaiotic settlement that was later conquered by the Romans that founded the true beginnings of the city of Palma de Mallorca, back then in history a Roman camp. The Romans called it Palmaria and the port was utilised for transport of goods and people to Africa. No visible signs of this period are still standing in modern Palma, however occasional archaeological artefacts are still excavated.

The interesting and dramatic history of the city of Palma saw it raided by the Vandals during the fall of the Roman Empire. Palma was then taken by the Byzantine Empire, then later than this colonised by the Moors and finally Palma de Mallorca was taken by James I of Aragon. With such a long and enduring history, the modern city of Palma takes on a whole new character when one considers its past, steeped in history and brimming with culture. Having visited Palma some 20 times myself, I write with a certain level of authority on this subject that I am passionate about. Palma de Mallorca has a wealth of history, however at the same time Palma is a vibrant cosmopolitan city and offers something for everyone that visits. A holiday to Mallorca is highly recommended and this gem of an island in the Mediterranean sea is always going to attract tourists for all reasons.
